Who Can Enroll
Five things get you in the door. Most people already have four of them.
The basics
- You're 18 or older.
- You have a valid driver's license from the state you live in. Texas if you live in Texas, New Mexico if you live in New Mexico.
- You can speak, read and understand English. Federal law requires every commercial driver to read highway signs and signals, converse with the public, answer questions from law enforcement and safety officials, and make entries on reports and records in English (49 CFR 391.11(b)(2)). Because it is a condition of driving commercially, it is a condition of enrolling here, and it applies to Class A and to Class B (Bus) alike. MVVI offers ESL classes to any student who wants to strengthen their English — ask an advisor before you apply.
One of these five — you only need one
Any single item below meets the requirement. You don't need more than one, and no option is better than another.
High school diploma
A U.S. high school diploma, or a diploma from another country that's equivalent to one. Foreign diplomas count. Bring what you have and we'll help you sort out whether it qualifies.
GED or equivalent
A GED or an equivalent secondary credential.
Home schooling
Home schooling completed at the secondary level.
Some college
12 or more academic semester hours completed at an accredited college or university. Any subject counts, and you don't need a degree.
Ability to benefit
You can qualify by showing you're ready to do the work. It's a short reading-and-math test called the Wonderlic Basic Skills Test, and a score of 200 verbal and 210 quantitative admits you — no diploma, no GED, no college. We give the test here at our campus, at no cost to you. Students who come in this way sit in the same class, earn the same certificate, and get the same job placement help as everyone else.
One more thing before you start
- A DOT medical card From a certified medical examiner. Your DOT physical is included in your tuition — we'll schedule it for you, so you don't have to arrange it yourself.
About the job — not about getting in
These aren't admission requirements. You can enroll and earn your CDL without them. They're things that affect what kind of driving work you can take afterward, and we'd rather you know now than find out later.
- Interstate driving starts at 21. You can earn your CDL at 18 and drive within your state right away. Crossing state lines, and most long-haul work, requires you to be 21.
- A recent DUI or DWI limits who will hire you. It doesn't stop you from enrolling or from getting licensed. It does narrow your options with carriers, and some won't consider a conviction in the last five years. Tell your advisor early — we'll be straight with you about what your record means for job placement.
